The Clothing Alterations program extends learning beyond alteration techniques. Eligible students may have opportunities to participate in actual client service activities and gain experience with the professional responsibilities involved in operating an alterations service.

Students gain experience in:

• Client Consultation & Garment Assessment — examining garments, listening to the client's requested fit, identifying construction issues, determining what alterations are technically appropriate, and communicating recommendations.

• Estimating & Work Documentation — identifying the scope of work, understanding labor requirements, documenting alteration requests, measurements, fitting information, and service specifications.

• Professional Client Service — communicating with paying customers, maintaining appropriate professional boundaries, and understanding expectations for handling customer property.

• Task Offers & Acceptance — receiving opportunities to perform client work and learning to evaluate and accept assignments based on skill, availability, and required completion dates.

• Production & Quality Standards — completing alterations according to established specifications and applying professional workmanship and finishing standards.

• Time & Deadline Management — planning work around promised delivery dates and understanding the importance of completing accepted assignments on time.

• E2E Experience — qualified students may be offered supervised client projects through AFI's Education-to-Employment (E2E) platform, providing experience that connects classroom instruction with professional practice.

• Post-Certificate Opportunities — students who earn the Alterations Certificate may become eligible for AFI's independent provider referral opportunities as they pursue employment or establish their own alterations businesses.
